The Seven Wonders

Do you know about the seven wonders of the world?

people thought that they were the most fantastic buildings in the world. More of them were in or near Egypt. They tell  us the stories of human imagination and technical side, and how civilizations left their unique marks on the world and culture.

 

  1. The lighthouse of Alexandria.
  2. The Hangang Gardens of Babylon.
  3. The statue of Zeus.
  4. The clossus of Rhodes.
  5. The temple of Artemis.
  6. The tomb of Mausolus.
  7. The Great pyramids of Giza.

 The lighthouse of Alexandria.

For many centuries ,the lighthouse of Alexandria was the tallest building ever made. The sea was dangerous for boats because there were a lot of rocks near Alexandria. The lighthouse warned boats about the rocks. This was a very important invention.


 
We use similar technology today, we still use lighthouse to warn boats about rocks. Boats are safe now thanks for the work of the ancient Egyptians. It was constructed on Pharos, an island in the harbor of Alexandria in Egypt, known as Kemet by its ancient citizens. It was completed between 285 and 247 B.C.E. Today, visitors to the site where the lighthouse stood encounter the Egyptian fort Qaitbay

 The Hangang Gardens of Babylon.

 

The Hangang Gardens of Babylon were probably in modern day Iraq. These were beautiful gardens around huge palace.The hanging gardens were believed to have been built around 600 B.C.E., by Nebuchadnezzar II, who ruled Babylonia from 605–562 B.C.E. 

 The statue of Zeus

The statue of Zeus was in ancient Greece. This was believed to be the biggest statue in the world. Phidias, the most famous sculptor of the ancient era, was tasked with creating a statue worthy of the fabled god Zeus.The figure of Zeus seated on a throne coated in gold, precious stones, ivory, and ebony was housed in the Temple of Zeus at Olympia in western Greece.

 


In his right hand, Zeus clutched a statue of Nike, the goddess of triumph.In his left hand, he grasped a sculptress crowned with an eagle. The statue was lost and destroyed in an earthquake during the fifth century.

 The clossus of Rhodes

Another wonder of the world was  the clossus of Rhodes. This was another big statue in ancient Greece.It represented the god Helios, and was built to thank the gods for the victory over Demetrius Poliorcetes’ long siege (305 BCE) of Rhodes. The Colossus of Rhodes  won a place in the famous list of Wonders. "But even lying on the ground, it is a marvel.Around 226 BC, Rhodes was damaged by a powerful earthquake.The city was badly damaged, and the Colossus was broken at its weakest point - the knee. 

The temple of Artemis.

 The Temple of Artemis is also known as The temple of Diana.  It was located in Ephesus Turkey. By 401 AD it had been  destroyed. Only foundations and fragments of the last temple remain at the site. In the 7th century BC, a flood destroyed the temple,

 

The tomb of Mausolus

 One of the World's Seven Wonders.The tomb of Mausolus, ruler of Caria in southeastern Asia Minor, was the site of the monument. Artemisia II, his sister and widow, built it at his capital city of Halicarnassus between 353 and 351 BCE. 

The Great pyramids of Giza 

Today, only the Great Pyramid of Giza remains. Experts believe that was the first ancient wonder because it is older than others.

Every year millions of people come to see the pyramids of Egypt. They are some of the most visited tourist  attractions anywhere.

For many people, The Great Pyramid of Giza is a wonder of the modern world. Which building do you like the best?Why?
